How does Botox Cosmetic Work?

Botox® Cosmetic is a compound that reduces wrinkles in the face. A few tiny injections weaken and inactivate the muscles that cause wrinkles; as the muscles weaken, the skin atop the muscles will relax, causing wrinkles to soften or disappear. Since Botox® weakens only muscle tissue, Botox® does not affect nervous tissue and does not cause numbness or loss of sensation at or around injection sites. Botox® results last about four months.

What to expect during your consultation

During your cosmetic consultation, we determine (with your help) which treatment is appropriate for you. This depends on your individual needs and expectations. This is your best opportunity to ask any questions you like and address all concerns about Botox® before following through with the procedure. This exam also allows us to estimate the number of treatments and interval between treatments that will help you achieve your goal.

Treatment

Treatment is nonsurgical, so Botox® requires neither a surgery center nor anesthesia. Botox® is performed in the office. This appointment usually lasts 15 to 30 minutes. The dose of Botox® will be injected based on your aesthetic goals, and you may feel a brief stinging sensation that quickly subsides.
